Materieel Strafrecht, Formeel Strafrecht, Pleitoefening) en de master Rechtsgeleerdheid, afstudeerrichting Strafrecht (bijv. Verdieping Formeel en Materieel Strafrecht, Jeugd en Strafrecht). Ook is er de mogelijkheid om in de Engelstalige bacheloropleiding Law in Society strafrechtelijk onderwijs te verzorgen. Daarnaast verricht je wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar strafrechtelijke thema\u2019s binnen het onderzoeksprogramma \u2018Empirie en Norm bij Delinquent Gedrag en Strafrechtelijke Handhaving\u2019, het gezamenlijke onderzoeksprogramma van de afdeling Strafrecht en de afdeling Criminologie. Similarly, bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) have long been assumed to require metabolically active hosts. However, several recent studies and our own findings challenge this assumption. We have identified over a dozen phages capable of replicating in growth-arrested E. coli, suggesting that dormancy-killing is far more common than previously recognized. How do phages replicate in dormant cells? The phages we discovered are genetically diverse and differentially respond to bacterial knock-outs, pointing to multiple, evolutionarily distinct solutions to this challenge.<\/p>\n<p><em>Project:<\/em> you will integrate high-throughput phenotypic screening with state-of-the-art genetic tools to understand how phages bypass bacterial dormancy. Furthermore, you will engineer these genes into phages that lack this capability, expanding their activity towards persistent bacterial populations.<\/p>\n<p><em>Impact:<\/em> Your work will reveal fundamental new mechanisms in phage biology and has urgent clinical relevance: uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), a leading cause of recurrent urinary tract infections, and M. tuberculosis (Mtb), which evades antibiotics by entering dormancy, both exemplify the medical challenge of treating persistent infections. By developing novel phages active against dormant UPEC and Mtb, you will provide powerful new therapeutic options for the world\u2019s most frequent and most deadly infections<\/p>\n<p><em>Embedding:<\/em> Your PhD project is funded by an NWO-M2 grant, supervised by Yuval Mulla (VU) and co-supervised by Coen Kuijl (VUmc). You will be embedded in the molecular microbiology department of the VU and will closely collaborate with a PhD student at the medical microbiology section of the Amsterdam UMC. You will work directly with Prof. dr. Jan-Willem van Prooijen, as well as with members of the broader Horizon2020 Proclaim consortium that is coordinated by Dr. Seunghyun Sun (Tilburg University). You will specifically conduct experimental and longitudinal research exploring the effects of covert hate speech on polarization and radicalization. You will report the findings to your colleagues, the broader consortium, at conferences, and publish them as a lead author in academic publications. The project includes one field campaign to a remote volcanic island and various research visits to collaborators in the UK and Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The 3 PhDs will apply advanced analytical techniques to analyse minerals and melt inclusions (MI) in volcanics from various plume localities and will use that data in geochemical and geophysical numerical modelling.<\/p>\n<p>The team will work on three main tasks:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Improve the accuracy of plume source composition<\/li>\n<li>Quantify changes with tectonic setting and time<\/li>\n<li>Determine the impact on convection behaviour and element exchange<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Topic 1 will be addressed by determining the elemental and radiogenic- and stable isotope compositions of minerals and melt inclusions. Topic 2 requires comparing the analytical data for various plume localities (Iceland, Azores, St Helena, Ascension, Tristan-Gough). Topic 3 will be addressed by geochemical and geodynamic modelling. The 3 PhDs will work on all three topics by using different techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The analytical work will be performed in the NIGEL laboratories at VU Amsterdam and at laboratories of collaborators in the UK (Edinburgh) and Germany (Munster). The geodynamic modelling will be done at GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany in collaboration with Juliane Dannberg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your duties<\/strong><br \/>The PhD students will apply and further develop advanced analytical techniques to determine combined major, trace and volatile element and isotope data on mineral and melt inclusion by wet-chemistry techniques (clean laboratory work), TIMS and MC-ICPMS mass spectrometry (PhD1), and by in situ Laser Ablation MC-ICPMS (PhD2) and SIMS techniques (PhD3). Applicants thus preferably have hands-on experience with analytical geochemistry. The volatile and stable isotope analyses by SIMS will furthermore include high pressure experiments for sample preparation (PhD3). For the geodynamic modelling the PhD students will take part in a 10-day ASPECT coding workshop. Applicants thus preferably have strong affinity in computational methodologies.<\/p>\n<p>Selected candidates will closely collaborate with other team members, colleagues and collaborators. The research will lead to peer-reviewed publications that will be used to write a PhD thesis.
