What will you do?
KNMI provides the national space weather warning service for the Netherlands. The front office consists of a 24/7 monitoring service by trained meteorologists in the central weather room. You'll be part of the space weather back office team. The back office is in the R&D Satellite Observations department and is responsible for all non-operational activities for space weather, such as maintaining national and international collaborations, research, product development, knowledge management, end-user contacts with critical infrastructure sectors, science project acquisition, policy support and budget planning.

The back office has contacts with the major space weather services in Europe and the US, and we represent the Netherlands in various international bodies. Within the Netherlands we collaborate with various ministries and universities. As space weather is a broad subject, KNMI intends to focus its research activities on satellite observations of space weather in the Earth’s environment, in particular the Earth’s thermosphere-ionosphere and impact studies for vital infrastructure sectors. An important task will be the verification and validation of alerts and advisories issued by KNMI at the national level and the PECASUS consortium, one of the ICAO-designated centres serving international civil aviation.

Your activities

• Support the front office during severe space weather events.
• Verification and validation tasks for aviation.
• User consultation, training and end-users support.
• Further develop our general warning service (work instruction, software improvements, align with crisis coordination centres at ministries).
• Contribute to education and outreach activities for space weather.
• Contribute to scientific research related to space weather effects in the ionosphere and thermosphere.
• Software development in consultation with our architects and other stakeholders.

Your team
The space weather back office consists of a small team of scientists: 3 FTE, including yourself. We are part of the larger (~55 FTE) R&D Satellite Observations (RDSW) department which contributes to weather and climate research and monitoring of the Earth system by utilising the observations of satellites as well as surface remote sensing, balloon, and aircraft observations.

The main research activities of RDSW are on climate research, air quality, stratospheric ozone, and of course, space weather. The satellite activities of the department encompass the entire range from collecting user requirements, developing instrument concepts, generating the required satellite products, to atmospheric research using the satellite data. RDSW is characterized by a positive atmosphere. Colleagues like to have a cup of coffee or tea together and are very approachable. The mix of men and women of different ages and with diverse backgrounds also contributes to a pleasant working environment within the department.

Teamleider Service en Beheer

Hoe jij bijdraagt in deze rol
Als teamleider Service en Beheer werk je binnen de vakgroep Waarnemingen Operationeel (WO). Deze vakgroep is verantwoordelijk voor het in stand houden en vernieuwen van de waarneeminfrastructuur en het valideren van waarneemgegevens van het KNMI. Dit gebeurt op basis van vastgestelde functionele eisen en kwaliteitsnormen. Jij bent de direct leidinggevende van circa 20 servicemedewerkers, beheerders en technisch specialisten. Samen zorgen jullie voor het goed functioneren en continu verbeteren van het KNMI-meetnet.

Je begeleidt het team bij de uitvoering van onderhouds- en storingswerkzaamheden op locaties verspreid over Nederland, de Noordzee en Caribisch Nederland. Jij creëert duidelijke kaders, bewaakt het raamwerk waarbinnen het werk wordt uitgevoerd en zorgt voor overzicht. Wanneer het team er zelfstandig niet uitkomt, ben jij beschikbaar om mee te denken en waar nodig bij te sturen op werkzaamheden en processen.

Het afgelopen jaar zijn belangrijke stappen gezet in het verbeteren en borgen van de operationele werkprocessen. Als teamleider geef je leiding aan het team én zorg je voor verdere optimalisatie van deze processen. Daarbij zijn samenwerking, professionalisering van het assetmanagement en het verstevigen van de bijbehorende werkwijzen essentieel. Hoewel er al mooie vooruitgang is geboekt, ligt hier nog een duidelijke ontwikkelopgave.

Jouw werkzaamheden

• Aansturen van het team Service en Beheer bij de uitvoering van operationele werkzaamheden.
• Verdere professionalisering van het assetmanagement, inclusief processen, werkwijzen en organisatorische inrichting.
• Scheppen en borgen van duidelijke kaders en afspraken waarbinnen het werk wordt uitgevoerd en afstemming hierover met betrokken stakeholders.
• Bewaken van het prioriteringsproces voor zowel geplande als ad-hoc werkzaamheden.
• Rapporteren en toetsen van de kwaliteit en naleving van gemaakte afspraken (bijv. SLA’s).
• Opstellen van het jaarplan en het budget voor Service en Beheer

Je stuurt een binnendienst, buitendienst en technisch specialisten aan. De sfeer binnen het team is prettig, collegiaal en er heerst een groot gevoel van trots op het KNMI. Juridisch adviseur

Het KNMI levert dag en nacht onafhankelijke kennis, advies en waarschuwingen over risico’s op het gebied van weer, klimaat en seismologie. Hiervoor werken we samen met veel partijen in de samenleving. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan weerdata voor de luchtvaart of voor de organisatoren van grote events. Als juridisch adviseur ben jij de vraagbaak voor collega's met soms complexe juridische vraagstukken en werk je mee aan pragmatische oplossingen. Wil je weten hoe je dit gaat doen? Lees snel verder.

Hoe jij bijdraagt in je juridische rol
Als juridisch adviseur pak je samen met collega's een breed scala aan juridische vraagstukken op: van strategische onderwerpen, zoals wetgeving tot kortlopende adviesvragen. Het merendeel van jouw werk bestaat uit vraagstukken die daartussen liggen, zoals grote aanbestedingen en projecten of internationale overeenkomsten.

Jouw werkzaamheden

• Je adviseert contracthouders over de juridische aspecten van overeenkomsten.
• Je geeft advies bij het opstellen van verschillende soorten overeenkomsten voor nationale en internationale samenwerking en beoordeelt deze op juridische risico's.
• Je adviseert als er vragen zijn over de juridische aspecten van aanbestedingen of de Wet open overheid (Woo).
• Je werkt aan verschillende dossiers tegelijkertijd en adviseert over een breed scala aan rechtsgebieden zoals privaatrecht en Europees recht.

Jouw team
Je werkt nauw samen met 2 juristen. We stemmen onderling veel af en geven feedback op elkaars werk. Wekelijks werken we een dag samen op kantoor in De Bilt. Daarnaast vinden we elkaar regelmatig in overleggen of om met elkaar te sparren. Ook bouw je een netwerk op binnen en buiten het KNMI: zo heb je veel contact met contract- en accountmanagers over lopende zaken, maar schakel je ook met collega's van het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat. Het KNMI is momenteel intern in ontwikkeling, daarom voeren we veel gesprekken met andere afdelingen over hoe we ons als team Juridisch Advies goed binnen de organisatie kunnen positioneren.

Post-doc position atmospheric scientist (English)

As a post-doc specialised in models and observations of atmospheric composition, you’ll join our R&D team in pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery. What you will be doing
You will work in a dynamic and ambitious team of scientists studying air quality, atmospheric composition, and climate change at KNMI. You will contribute to the analysis and further development of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). You will be involved in two CAMS contracts focused on the Evaluation and Quality Control (EQC) of the CAMS Global and Regional (European) products, covering aerosols, reactive gases, greenhouse gases, and other aspects relevant to air quality.

Your work will involve comparing CAMS daily forecasts and reanalyses with a wide range of surface concentration and deposition observations, surface remote sensing sites, as well as aircraft and satellite measurements.

You won’t just be analysing data; you will collaborate closely with a large team of European scientists from more than 10 organisations and countries, as well as with the CAMS team at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). You will assist in coordinating EQC activities, support the interpretation of results, and contribute to improving the presentation of EQC outputs for the diverse community of CAMS users.

Through your EQC efforts, your work will help enhance the CAMS modelling and data assimilation system. In addition, you will initiate and contribute to scientific publications.

Onderzoeker Weather Generator

Are you passionate about advancing weather modeling using cutting-edge technology? Join the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in the EU funded Horizon project Weather Generator. The goal of this project, led by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), is to develop a European open-source foundation model for weather and climate in a collaborative effort of 16 institutes, where we push the future of high resolution weather modeling through deep learning. How you contribute in this role
As part of the Data Science cluster in the Research & Development Weather and Climate Models department, we drive the development, maintenance, and application of several cutting-edge machine learning models. Our focus is on advancing machine learning methods for postprocessing of numerical weather prediction model output, as well as pioneering data-driven weather models using machine learning; a task where you will play a key role. You will contribute to the development of a specific tail network of the Weather Generator, namely a network to improve high resolution probabilistic extreme weather forecasts in Western Europe.

Additionally, you will compare the performance of the forecasts from this tail network with those from another machine learning weather model, a so-called stretched grid model, and with those from our operational high resolution numerical weather prediction model Harmonie Arome.
