PhD position - Laser cooling and trapping Helium molecules

We are looking for a motivated and interested PhD-student, with a degree in physics or chemistry and with experience in laser physics, spectroscopy, and/or optical technology, who wishes to work with us in the international and stimulating environment of the joint Quantum Metrology group at LaserLaB Amsterdam.

This project aims to create the first ultracold gas of a directly laser-cooled homonuclear molecule, the helium dimer He_2. Starting from a supersonic beam, novel laser slowing and cooling techniques will be employed to create a trapped dense gas of ultracold molecules. Choosing the He_2 molecule constitutes a paradigm change in the field of ultracold molecules, as it will constitute the lightest and simplest molecule ever laser-cooled. This provides a controllable, simple 4-electron system at record low temperature, allowing quantum sensing and precision measurements to test QED and to study the quantum nature of collisions with unprecedented accuracy - while being accessible to highly accurate ab initio computational methods.

During the PhD, you will engage with various aspects of experimental physics, including ultrahigh vacuum, CAD design, optics and lasers, electronics, and scientific programming. There is also the possibility to delve into the theory of molecular Rydberg states and collisions using scattering theory.

Project Manager NWA-ORC

De Faculteit der Sociale en Geesteswetenschappen is per direct op zoek naar een projectmanager ter ondersteuning van twee NWA-ORC consortia. Je werkt nauw samen met beide projectleiders en zorgt voor soepele interne processen en heldere communicatie met NWO, externe partners en andere stakeholders.

Het project DeMoCraft (Democratic Moral Craftsmanship for Just and Resilient Institutions) onderzoekt hoe democratische en ethische vermogens politieke besluitvorming kunnen versterken tijdens maatschappelijke transities. Het project brengt 30 partners samen uit wetenschap, politiek en het maatschappelijk middenveld om gezamenlijk benaderingen te ontwikkelen die vertrouwen en beleidsintegriteit bevorderen.

DE-ESCALATING (De-escalating Aggressive Encounters between Frontline Workers and Citizens) onderzoekt de oorzaken van agressie in frontlinieberoepen (zoals handhaving, zorg, openbaar vervoer en detailhandel) en ontwikkelt praktische strategieën voor preventie en de-escalatie. Dit consortium omvat meer dan 25 partners en combineert onderzoekers en praktijkprofessionals om directe maatschappelijke impact te realiseren.

Beide projecten zijn gefinancierd door NWO vanuit het NWA ORC programma en omvatten grote consortia waarin academische, maatschappelijke, beleidsmatige en private partners samenwerken — wat zorgvuldige coördinatie, stakeholderbetrokkenheid en impactmanagement vereist.

Jouw taken

• Fungeren als rechterhand van de projectcoördinatoren, zowel voor interne processen binnen de universiteit als voor externe communicatie met partners en NWO
• Ontwikkelen en beheren van projectplannen en budgetten voor zowel DeMoCraft als DE-ESCALATING
• Coördineren van de dagelijkse werkzaamheden binnen de twee interdisciplinaire, multi-institutionele consortia
• Zorgen dat deliverables — waaronder consortiumrapportages, trainingsmateriaal en handboeken — van hoge kwaliteit zijn en tijdig worden opgeleverd
• Toezien op communicatie- en stakeholderstrategieën
• Ondersteunen van projectgovernance (stuurgroepen, adviesraden, consortiumcoördinatie)
• Monitoren van risico’s, implementeren van mitigatiestrategieën en coördineren van aanpassingen in overleg met de projectleiders

PhD Research on Particulate Air Quality

In the INFLAMES consortium (https://inflames-project.github.io), we are studying the impact of landscape fires on climate and society from a muti-disciplinary viewpoint. Your job will be to assess the contribution from fire smoke to local air pollution in mega-cities in Asia and Africa, and suggest (if possible) solutions to ameliorate bad air quality during the fire season.

You will combine the Dutch air-quality model LOTOS-EUROS with satellite observations, in a process called data assimilation, to arrive at the best possible description of the evolution of smoke plumes. The data assimilation will, in particular, give us better estimates of the strength of the smoke plumes. This leads to a better understanding of the smoke contribution to local air quality. This data assimilation system, which has been used before, will first be tested on local air pollution around Rotterdam (where we have many local measurements) but will later be applied to e.g. New Delhi or Harare where only satellite data can be used.

You will be hired by the Vrije Universiteit but have a placement for one day in the week at TNO (Utrecht) who have developed LOTOS-EUROS and will provide technical guidance. In addition, you will be a guest researcher at SRON (Leiden) who will provide the satellite data that you will use extensively.

Your duties

• run the LOTOS-EUROS model with data assimilation of satellite observations
• evaluate results against independent observations and analyse consequences for air quality
• participate in meetings of the INFLAMES consortium
• write and publish research papers
• present your results at (international) conferences

Medewerker Studentenzaken

Eén van onze collega's gaat per eind februari 2026 met zwangerschapsverlof. Daarom zoeken we voor de duur van 7 maanden (eind februari-eind augustus 2026) een tijdelijk collega die haar kan vervangen.

Als medewerker studentenzaken van ons onderwijsbureau waarborg je met je collega’s het efficiënte verloop van de administratieve onderwijsprocessen. Binnen het team studieadministratie neem jij primair de coördinatie van de digitale tentamens op je. Je zorgt ervoor dat tentamens die digitaal worden afgenomen met de huidige toetssoftware (TestVision) tijdig en juist klaarstaan voor afname. Je bewaakt de voortgang van de toetsafname en bent bereikbaar in geval van onregelmatigheden. Je bent het eerste aanspreekpunt voor docenten, de centrale tentamenorganisatie, surveillanten en andere collega’s.

De VU gaat per september 2026 overstappen naar nieuwe toetssoftware (Ans). Het leveren van een bijdrage aan de implementatie van deze toetssoftware maakt onderdeel uit van je tijdelijke functie.

Tenslotte houd je je bezig met andere onderwijsondersteunende processen binnen het team. Welke dat zijn en hoeveel ruimte daarvoor is binnen je uren bepalen we in onderling overleg.

Je werkt zelfstandig op inhoud en proces en voorziet alle betrokken partijen van de benodigde informatie en je biedt hulp en advies. Tegelijkertijd vraag je zelf ook om hulp als je die nodig hebt en zorg je dat je met je collega’s in verbinding blijft staan. Er komt veel voorbij in deze functie, wat het een uitdagende en afwisselende job maakt binnen een klein, leuk team!

Research Assistant Technical Support Unit IPBES Spatial planning assessment

In this function you support the process of working with 100 authors from across the world in making an assessment of biodiversity inclusive spatial planning and ecological connectivity. This assessmet is part of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) which has a membership of about 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

This junior researcher position is located at the technical support unit for the IPBES spatial planning and connectivity assessment (https://www.ipbes.net/spatial-planning-assessment) at the Institute for Environmental Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Together with a postdoc, the research assistant will be responsible for providing technical support for the production of the assessment by a large group of international experts. This entails both ensuring a smooth operation of the collaboration amongst a very diverse group of experts as well as supporting the assessment with literature search and small research components aimed at synthesizing existing knowledge. In addition, as part of the function you will spend about 1 day a week on research tasks in projects conducted by the Department of Environmental Geography within the Institute for Environmental Studies.

Your duties

• you support the overall production and editing of the assessment, including front matters, summary for policymakers, chapters and back matters, in line with relevant IPBES and UNEP rules and procedures
• you assist experts in delivering their work, including by reviewing literature and compiling and editing material for the assessment drafts, or by responding to their requests (e.g., for literature, data, etc.)
• you support the organization and facilitation of assessment-related meetings, including administrative tasks such as the arrangement of travel, logistical, and financial matters in collaboration with the meeting hosts
• you support internal and external review processes of the assessment
• you prepare, in coordination with the IPBES communications team, outreach and other communication materials related to the assessment.
