Programmaleider Klimaatbestendige Leefomgeving

GLOBIO project leader and senior researcher global ecological modelling
Global biodiversity is currently declining at an alarming rate. At PBL, we aim to support international biodiversity-relevant policy processes through scenario analyses with our global biodiversity model GLOBIO. We are currently looking for a motivated quantitative ecologist or environmental scientist to lead further development of the internationally renowned GLOBIO model.
To continue strong leadership of the GLOBIO project, we are looking for a candidate with an impressive academic background in ecological modelling for policy applications, alongside experience in leading and managing research projects. GLOBIO is a global model to assess large-scale impacts of human changes in the environment (e.g., climate change, land use, pollution) on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems (including biodiversity and ecosystem services). GLOBIO is also part of PBL's IMAGE-GLOBIO framework: a comprehensive integrated modelling framework of interacting human and natural systems. GLOBIO is consistently used in integrated biodiversity assessments that include trade-offs and co-benefits between nature, nature’s contributions to people (ecosystem services) and other sustainable development goals. In this position you will lead and contribute to the further development and application of the global biodiversity model GLOBIO.
This includes the following tasks:
- Leading the GLOBIO project including defining, planning and coordinating further model development activities in line with the GLOBIO strategy.
- Coordinating the GLOBIO project work at PBL and in close collaboration with several university partners.
- Translate applied policy questions to needs and actions for further model development (e.g., relations between biodiversity, ecosystem services and various environmental pressures such as climate change, land use, pollution, and feedbacks from nature to society), in collaboration with the IMAGE team.
- Contribute to the application of GLOBIO in (e.g. Horizon) projects on scenario simulations to inform biodiversity-relevant policy processes (e.g., via CBD, IPBES) in collaboration with (inter)national research institutes.
- Contribute to the technical implementation of novel model components.
- Contribute to acquisition / proposal writing for GLOBIO relevant tenders, when relevant in collaboration with the IMAGE team.
- Fostering scientific excellence and ensuring model quality, including through publishing model improvements in academic literature.

Senior Adviseur HRM & Organisatieontwikkeling
Want hoe bereiken we dat dat onze organisatie ‘fit for the future’ is?

Researcher global modelling of nature restoration
The state of biodiversity and ecosystems continues to degrade as pressures on nature increase. Consequently, ecosystem restoration has gained momentum as a solution to thwart this decline. In Europe, the Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, particularly those that directly benefit people through the supply of ecosystem services. Similarly, Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework requires countries to ensure the restoration of degraded ecosystems globally.
At PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, we do research to support policy decision-making. With the GLOBIO (http://www.globio.info) and IMAGE (www.pbl.nl/image) models, we develop and analyse scenarios to explore response options to mitigate climate change or bend the curve of biodiversity loss. Results are frequently used in international assessments, such as those by IPCC and IPBES.
In the two starting European research projects, NatureRestoreR and EcoNature, we will focus on nature restoration in Europe and supporting the implementation of the NRR. We are looking for two highly motivated researchers to contribute to these projects.
The two researchers will work closely together with other IMAGE and GLOBIO researchers, specialised in land use, biodiversity, foods systems and other related topics. A component of the work will focus on linking GLOBIO and IMAGE for a better representation of ecological restoration. It is important that you enjoy working in a team, while simultaneously being able to carry out research work independently. In addition, you contribute to other PBL research activities, including model development, scenario studies, fulfilment of project tasks, and publications. You have experience with ecosystem services, environmental, land-use, and/or ecological modelling, as well as statistical modelling, preferably in the context of global environmental change research. You have the ability to acquire new skills quickly and have a flexible attitude.
The two research positions differ slightly in their focus. Please motivate in your letter clearly if you have a preference for either of the following two researcher positions:
Position 1) Researcher modelling biodiversity and ecosystem services responses to nature restoration using the GLOBIO model
In this position, you will specifically focus on modelling biodiversity and ecosystem services responses to nature restoration. Your role will be to develop and apply quantitative spatially explicit models of how ecosystem services (e.g. flood control, carbon sequestration, pollination) respond to restoration measures. To achieve this, you will review and systematise existing knowledge on the impacts of different restoration measures on habitat conditions, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services. Additionally, you will translate these findings into quantitative relationships, identifying relevant parameters (such as climate and land use) and data, and implement them within the GLOBIO modelling framework (http://www.globio.info).
Position 2) Researcher integrated assessment modelling of nature restoration using the IMAGE model
In this position, you will specifically focus on the impact of nature restoration on biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the food system. You will focus on two tasks in this position. First, you will work on an empirical meta-study of restoration and its benefits and trade-offs with agricultural productivity. Second, you will improve the representation of nature restoration in the IMAGE model (www.pbl.nl/image) to assess the benefits and trade-offs related to the food system, climate mitigation, and other environmental challenges such as pollution and land degradation. Examples of topics that you will work on are the role of pollination in food provision, how agroforestry may benefit carbon storage, and how different management practices reduce soil erosion.

Researcher in climate scenarios and their uncertainties
At a time when climate change-related risks are becoming increasingly complex and interconnected, the need for robust scientific evidence to support decision-making has never been greater. In climate science, scenarios are frequently used as means to better understand future pathways and climate risks. These scenarios connect research communities working on the causes of climate change (energy and land use), earth system dynamics and climate science and climate impacts. The EU-funded FUTURA project brings together 40 European research institutes from these research communities to develop and analyse the next generation of integrated climate scenarios and to improve the interpretation and communication of results. PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency participates in FUTURA focusing on next-generation scenario development, feedbacks between climate change and human systems, and critical uncertainties using its IMAGE integrated assessment model.
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to contribute to the FUTURA project. Together with the full research team, you will develop and apply methods to quantify uncertainty in, for example, emission pathways, greenhouse gas concentrations, and changes in the physical earth system. We will analyse how these uncertainties interact and how they play a role in decision-making. In addition, you will contribute to the development of new scenarios, particularly considering the consequences of temporal overshoot of climate targets, i.e. how to return to the targets of the Paris Agreement after having passed them. For these goals, we expect you to have strong analytical skills, in particular, in relation to analysing uncertainty. Given the focus of the research, we expect you to have sufficient knowledge about climate change and the main driving forces. We work as a team, but we also expect you to be able to carry out research independently. Additionally, you contribute to other PBL research activities, including model development, scenario studies, fulfilment of project tasks, and publications.
