PhD Position at the Donders Centre for Cognition: Neural Control

Your research will focus on developing novel AI-driven methods for modelling, estimation and control of brain dynamics – time-dependent patterns of neural activity fundamental to brain function, behaviour and cognition. Controlled modulation of these dynamics has the potential to restore normal function and alleviate symptoms of neurological and psychiatric disorders such as Parkinson’s, epilepsy, depression, anxiety, chronic pain and movement disorders.

By integrating dynamical systems theory and control theory with machine learning, you will work toward a generalisable, adaptive infrastructure for personalised neuromodulation. Central to this is a closed-loop system where the brain is the control target, techniques such as focused ultrasound stimulation (FUS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS) act as actuators, the goal is to steer neural activity towards therapeutic or enhanced states.

Using neurobehavioural data, the system will generate individualised modulation commands, applicable across multiple neuromodulation methods.

As part of the position, you will also spend 10% of your time on PhD jobs such as project support, teaching and supervision. This may include mentoring student projects and assisting in course delivery.

Onderzoekscoördinator Cool at School (CatS)

Postdoctoral Position at the Donders Centre for Cognition: Learning New Words (short term)

You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers consisting of Clara Ekerdt, Guillen Fernandez, Gabi Janzen, Evan Kidd, Kristin Lemhöfer and James McQueen. This team have been working on a large-scale developmental project on individual differences in language processing that was funded through the NWO Gravitation grant ‘Language in Interaction’. Behavioural, functional and structural MRI data was collected from a cross-sectional developmental sample of 135 Dutch participants aged 8-26. Participants were asked to learn new words in Finnish, a language they did not speak, in a multi-day paradigm designed to test for effects of memory consolidation. The behavioural and fMRI data from this task are waiting to be analysed, as are related sMRI (grey and white matter) data. You will perform these analyses and write the findings up for publication.
