Lecturer/Researcher in Leisure Studies

About this job
As a lecturer/researcher (0.8-1 FTE) at the Academy for Leisure & Events (ALE), you will have the opportunity to guide and support our students – from our academic programmes (BSc and MSc) as well as our leisure management programmes (BA and MA) – as they grow into young professionals in the leisure and events management field. You will work alongside other lecturers, researchers and support staff in a close-knit, informal community. You will teach, guide and supervise students, and help develop educational materials.

In addition to teaching, you will also develop research activities aligned with your personal interests, your current research, and the research programme of the Leisure Studies Group at BUas. This programme revolves around two professorships. The first one is the Leisure and Tourism Experiences professorship (see website), which aims to understand and measure leisure and tourism experiences and their impact on people. The second is the Placemaking and Events professorship (see website), which studies the role of attractions and events in processes of regional and urban development and their impacts on regions, cities and communities. It is within the latter professorship that the vacancy sits.

Based on your expertise, you will conduct academic research touching on the relationship between places, events and societal transitions. You have leisure- and tourism-related knowledge and expertise in areas such as governance, public policy, stakeholder networks, economics, regional development, spatial planning, and/or environmental impacts. It is an advantage if you have an (academic) business or economics background in events. As a lecturer/researcher you will bring critical and interdisciplinary perspectives on the role of events and placemaking in shaping contemporary societies, both in teaching and in research. You are able to connect academic research in the field of leisure and tourism with professional practice, and contribute to an interdisciplinary teaching and research environment. You will actively work towards publishing research in international, peer-reviewed academic journals. As such, the position is comparable in seniority and responsibility to an Assistant Professor position at a research university, though with a higher teaching load (approximately 80/20).

What do we offer?

• The salary for this position amounts to a monthly minimum of €4,632.17 and a monthly maximum of €6,677.44 (gross amounts based on full-time employment);
• This position is classified in scale 11 of the cao-hbo (collective labour agreement). Your official job title will be Lecturer/Researcher;
• This job involves a temporary replacement of a maximum of two years. Therefore, you will be given a one-year employment contract with the possibility of a one-year extension;
• Your commuting expenses will be fully reimbursed when you travel by public transport;
• You will receive a contribution towards your health insurance costs;
• You will receive an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% in December and an annual holiday allowance of 8% in May;

AI Student Assistant

About this job
As an AI Student Assistant (0.07 FTE – approximately three hours a week), you will join the Community for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and AI team, and serve as the go-to person across the institute for fellow students with everyday questions about AI tools and the Claude licences available at BUas. CTL is the central hub for professional development, educational innovation and staff collaboration at BUas. It connects people, ideas and resources to enhance education. At the moment, it is building a Community of Practice for Claude Ambassadors and we are looking for one student per domain to be part of this process.

In this role, you will be the first point of contact for AI related questions within your academy. You are available in person or via chat, represent the student perspective of your domain in a monthly meeting, and stay informed of new AI development and updates as they are shared by the CTL and AI team.

Being available will be your main task: we estimate roughly three hours per week, plus one monthly meeting. There are no formal support hours, desk duties, or open day commitments. Presence and availability within your academy are the core commitments.
