Dean of the University College

The dean is a member of the UCU Management Team (MT) alongside the managing director, the director of education and the student-assessor. The MT has the decisive mandate regarding policy development, finances, and monitoring the performance of the organisation. The MT is supported on strategic issues by a policy adviser. The dean is the direct supervisor of the managing director and the director of education. The dean is also the direct supervisor of UCU's five cluster chairs and manages and works closely with them.

The dean reports and is accountable to the Executive Board of the university via the Rector Magnificus. The Executive Board of Utrecht University bears the ultimate responsibility for all the processes within the university, and the University Administration supports the Executive Board. The deans of the faculties and UCU are partly responsible for the design and implementation of the university's strategy. They contribute to this by meeting on a regular basis with the Executive Board.

UCU's strategy and the educational policy are embedded in the wider strategic plan of Utrecht University's educational model. The UCU dean has the overall responsibility for UCU’s strategy and educational policy and maintains internal and external contacts.

The dean and managing director are jointly responsible for leading UCU. The dean is mainly responsible for:

• executing the UCU strategy and ensuring that this aligns with UU strategy;
• strengthening and maintaining the leading position of UCU in the Netherlands and beyond;
• ensuring the financial health of the college by maintaining organisational flexibility to respond to fluctuations in funding;
• strengthening connections between UCU and the broader Utrecht University organisation at all levels, with a particular emphasis on UCU's role as an institution of educational innovation and an interdisciplinary breeding ground;
• keeping the close-knit, residential community unified and safeguarding community diversity and inclusion of its members;
• fostering development of academic leadership at all levels;
• fostering a culture and practice of continuous development and innovation throughout the UCU organisation.

PhD Position on Causal Effects of Communication in MARL

In this project, we focus on interpretability of the communication in MARL algorithms. We aim to bring together causality and multi-agent reinforcement learning, using causal methods to understand the effects of communication on MARL agents’ (learning) behaviors. This could cover better interpreting the potential causal relations between communication strategies and the learning performance, or using causal representation learning for developing more effective and interpretable MARL with communication algorithms.

As a PhD candidate, you will primarily perform research within the scope of the project culminating in a successful dissertation, as well as writing academic articles and presenting your work on international AI and machine learning conferences.

This position offers you rich development opportunities. You will be part of the Hybrid Intelligence consortium, a network of excellence of universities and institutes in the Netherlands focused on the combination of human and machine intelligence. You will then have the chance to participate in international summer schools, conferences and workshops to broaden your research skills and network. In addition, you will have the opportunity to contribute to teaching and supervising AI-related thesis projects at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels (10-15% of your time).

This project is funded by Hybrid Intelligence gravity project. This particular project is a collaboration between the Intelligent Systems Lab at Utrecht University and the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab at University of Amsterdam. You will be part of the Intelligent Systems group at Utrecht University, and will work under the supervision of Dr Shihan Wang (daily supervisor), Dr Sara Magliacane (co-supervisor) and Professor Mehdi Dastani (promotor).

Projectcoördinator Utrecht Bioinformatics Center

In de rol van projectcoördinator ondersteun je de wetenschappers in het laten slagen van hun project. In dit geval neem je specifiek de coördinatie van het Utrecht Bioinformatics Center (UBC) op je. Het UBC is één van de onderdelen van het strategisch thema Life Sciences van de Universiteit Utrecht. Binnen dit thema werken onderzoekers uit verschillende disciplines samen met maatschappelijke partners aan urgente maatschappelijke vraagstukken. Het UBC verenigt in dit kader de dynamische bioinformatica community op het Utrecht Science Park.

Je werkt nauw samen met de wetenschappers die het UBC leiden. Samen met hen zet je de strategie uit en voer je de acties uit die daaruit voortkomen. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is het jaarlijkse symposium dat jij mede organiseert, gericht op het verbinden van mensen binnen de community.

Je maakt deel uit van het team Projectmanagement binnen de afdeling Onderzoek- en Valorisatiebeleid van de Faculteit Bètawetenschappen. In dit team werk je samen met collega’s die de coördinatie verzorgen van andere onderdelen binnen de Strategische thema’s Life Sciences en Pathways to Sustainability, zoals Science for Life, Science for Sustainablity en Future Food. Je kunt met hen kennis en ervaringen uitwisselen. Daarnaast stem je de strategie en de activiteiten van het UBC af met de managing director van het strategisch thema Life Sciences.

Jouw taken bestaan verder uit het volgende:

• Je organiseert proactief verschillende activiteiten, zoals symposia, seminars en andere community-bijeenkomsten.
• Je coördineert en schrijft mee aan voortgangsrapportages en het visiedocument, en werkt voor de communicatie-uitingen samen met de afdeling communicatie.
• Je zorgt ervoor dat afgesproken acties worden opgevolgd en dat de wetenschappelijke leiders op het juiste moment worden ingeschakeld.
• Je hebt een sleutelrol in het adviseren van de wetenschappelijke leiders van het UBC om het bioinformatica onderzoek en onderwijs in Utrecht te verbeteren.
• Je ondersteunt het UBC op verschillende beleidsaspecten en vormt de verbinding met beleidsadviseurs van het college van bestuur, het strategisch thema en de deelnemende faculteiten (Bètawetenschappen, Diergeneeskunde en Geneeskunde).
• Je hebt een actieve rol in het versterken van de bioinformatics gemeenschap binnen alle betrokken faculteiten.

PhD Position in Causality-Aware Explanations for Probabilistic Graphical Models

Probabilistic models are central to modern AI systems, particularly in domains where uncertainty is the norm. In high-stake domains, decisions supported through AI systems can have a significant impact and users therefore need to be able to contest and understand how the decisions are made. Uncertainty underlying predictions and advice is hard to explain, but causality is a concept closer to human intuition.

In this project, you will study uncertainty and causality in probabilistic graphical models with the goal of designing causality-aware explanations. Explanations should also be adaptable for different users who may have different views on what counts as a meaningful explanation. Your research will be part of the Hybrid Intelligence Centre, which aims to design systems that profit from both human and machine intelligence. This large nation-wide consortium provides you with numerous opportunities to collaborate with a diverse group of PhD candidates and more senior researchers on various challenges and use cases, both within and outside our department.

You will be employed by Utrecht University and have the status of an employee rather than a student status. You will become a member of the Intelligent Systems group of the Department of Information and Computing Sciences (ICS) and a regular visitor of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) at Leiden University. Daily supervision will be performed by dr. Silja Renooij (UU-ICS) and dr. Anna V. Kononova (LIACS).

Your main tasks and opportunities:

• conduct original research related to the above mentioned topics, using a combination of techniques ranging from mathematics, algorithm design and implementation, to computer experiments and design research;
• publish, present and share your findings through scientific articles and at international journals and conferences;
• actively participate in the Hybrid Intelligence consortium and take part in its training programme, as well as the educational programme of the Graduate School of Natural Sciences;
• contribute to the teaching activities of the ICS department (10-15% of your time), gaining valuable academic experience;
• write and defend your PhD thesis within the duration of your contract.

Hoogleraar organisatieontwikkeling & leiderschap voor transities

Als leerstoelhouder voer je fundamenteel en toegepast onderzoek uit naar de impact van maatschappelijke transities op organisaties. Je richt je op de manier waarop organisaties zich ontwikkelen als gevolg van deze transities, welke betekenis organisatieontwikkeling heeft voor die transities en welk type leiderschap nodig is om daarin richting te geven. In dit onderzoek werk je samen met publieke organisaties en private partijen (met een publieke taak), en ga je in op vraagstukken rondom duurzaamheid, eerlijkheid en inclusie. Je hebt daarbij oog voor de spanningen, tegenstellingen en machtsconflicten die spelen tijdens deze veranderingen.

Je hebt bijzondere aandacht voor vraagstukken op het gebied van duurzaamheid en de eerlijkheid en rechtvaardigheid die daarmee samenhangen. Je onderzoekt de gevolgen van de duurzaamheidstransitie voor organisaties, met nadruk op kwesties van fairness en inclusie, en de benodigde organisatieontwikkelingen en veranderkundige aanpakken. Hierbij analyseer je deze vraagstukken niet alleen op het niveau van individuele organisaties, maar ook in de context van inter-organisatorische en publiek-private samenwerkingen. Verder onderzoek je (de effectiviteit van) leiderschap dat in het samenspel van interne en externe krachten getoond wordt of benodigd is, zodat publieke organisaties of organisaties met een publieke taak aan die verantwoordelijkheden invulling geven.

Je verbindt jouw onderzoek met het USBO-onderzoeksprogramma en de strategische thema’s Pathways to Sustainability en Institutions for Open Societies van de Universiteit Utrecht. Daarbij breng je je inhoudelijke expertise op het gebied van organisatieontwikkeling en leiderschap in, in relatie tot maatschappelijke transities - met name de duurzaamheidstransitie. Deze transities vragen immers om diepgaande institutionele en organisatorische veranderingen, zoals nieuwe strategieën, werkwijzen, inzet van middelen, routines, sturingsvormen en management. Je hanteert een pluriforme onderzoeksbenadering waarin verschillende wetenschapsfilosofische perspectieven en zowel kwalitatieve als kwantitatieve methoden worden gewaardeerd.

Naast fundamenteel onderzoek vervul je vooral ook een stimulerende en initiërende rol in toegepast academisch onderzoek en academisch advieswerk op het terrein van de leerstoel. Je zoek actief de samenwerking op met uiteenlopende maatschappelijke partners op lokaal, regionaal en/of (inter)nationaal niveau en dat dit leidt tot het acquireren en begeleiden van adviesopdrachten en contractonderzoeken.

Verder draag je bij aan het onderwijs dat USBO aanbiedt in alle fasen van de opleiding (bachelor, master en PhD), alsook aan onderwijs voor professionals. Hierbij heb je aandacht voor de professionele en academische vaardigheden die aankomende en werkzame professionals in de organisatiepraktijk nodig hebben om met maatschappelijke transities om te gaan.

Je levert als programmaleider, coördinator, docent en begeleider een belangrijke bijdrage aan zowel inleidende als gespecialiseerde cursussen op het gebied van organisatieontwikkeling, management en leiderschap. Naast het bewaken en doorontwikkelen van programmalijnen en het zelf coördineren en verzorgen van cursussen, betreft dit taken als het begeleiden van scripties, het geven van voorlichting en het begeleiden van collega-docenten.

Je hebt affiniteit en aantoonbare ervaring met leidinggeven en bestuurlijke taken. Je bent in staat en bereid om bestuurlijke en leidinggevende rollen te vervullen binnen de afdeling en het departement (en op termijn mogelijk ook op facultair niveau). Je laat effectief leiderschap zien en schept een veilig, open, constructief, divers en inclusief academisch klimaat, waarbinnen uitwisselen, leren en samenwerken de norm zijn.

Verder houd je je bezig met de volgende activiteiten:

• Je draagt bij aan de verdere uitwerking van het USBO-onderzoeksprogramma ‘Public Matters’, in het bijzonder op het gebied van organisatieontwikkeling en leiderschap rond (ingrijpende) maatschappelijke transities, en het entameren en verrichten van onderzoek op het terrein van de leerstoel.
• Je verkent en versterkt verbindingen met andere (inter)universitaire thema’s (Pathways to Sustainability en Institutions for Open Societies) en projecten.
• Je zet interdisciplinaire en internationale onderzoeksprojecten op, vraagt financiering aan bij onder andere NWO, de KNAW en EU-programma’s, en begeleidt deze projecten van aanvraag tot uitvoering.
• Je acquireert en begeleidt adviesopdrachten en contractonderzoeken binnen het domein van de leerstoel.
• Je entameert, ontwikkelt en verzorgt onderwijsonderdelen binnen de bestuurs- en organisatiewetenschap, zowel op bachelor- en masterniveau als in het onderwijs voor professionals, met bijzondere aandacht voor het thema van de leerstoel.
• Je versterkt het onderwijs in professionele en academische vaardigheden die aankomende en werkzame professionals in de organisatiepraktijk nodig hebben om met politieke en maatschappelijke veranderingen om te gaan.
• Je geeft leiding aan wetenschappelijk personeel waaronder promovendi, postdocs, UD’s en UHD’s.
• Je vervult bestuurlijke en coördinerende taken binnen de afdeling, en op termijn mogelijk ook het departement en de faculteit.
